In one of the most interesting races that took place on Dec 2. 2012, the Spanish athlete Ivan Fernandez Anaya who was competing at the London’s Summer Olympics taught the world through fair playing that sometimes sportsmanship is prior to winning a competition.
Ivan Fernandez Anaya was in the second place running some distance behind the leader racer Abel Mutai and could easily win the game unless an unexpected act was performed few meters away the crossing line.
Mutai the special in 3000 meters steeplechase won the gold medal in the World Youth Championships in Morocco on 2005, and achieved his best time in Lisbon on 2006. Later on 2012, he was at the first position in African Championships Porto Novo, Benin.
Abel Mutai was at the first position in the Olympic Games in London just few steps from his competitor, Ivan Fernandez Anaya. Mutai mistakenly stopped running 10 meters before the terminal. After stopping, he was surprised by the audiences’ feedback who was trying to draw his attention that he had to continue running; but as Mutai doesn’t speak Spanish, he didn’t understanding their message.
Ivan Fernandez Anaya recognized the issue and surprised the world with his heroic reaction. Instead of profiting from this golden occasion to win, Fernandez Anaya, instead, kept behind and slowed down his running rhythm to allow the Kenyan racer to complete his victory.
By this gesture, Ivan Fernandez Anaya did not win the race but instead, he won fans from all over the world.
