Tennis fans criticized Emma Raducanu today after she withdrew from her highly-anticipated mixed doubles match with Andy Murray, denying him a farewell Wimbledon appearance.
Anticipation had been high in South West London as Britain’s two most prominent players were set to team up for Murray’s final swansong at the All England Club. They were scheduled to face Zhang Shuai and Marcelo Arevalo as the fourth match on Court One this evening. However, Raducanu withdrew just hours before the match, citing stiffness in her right wrist.
Ticket-holders and Andy Murray alike were deeply disappointed. Murray, whose career was honored on Centre Court following a first-round men’s doubles loss with his brother Jamie, had been hoping for a fitting farewell.
Fans were devastated, eager to give arguably one of Britain’s greatest athletes a proper send-off, and some criticized Raducanu for her decision.

Emma Raducanu was spotted training at Wimbledon today dressed in an England football kit.

Andy Murray’s illustrious career was honored on Centre Court on Thursday following a first-round men’s doubles loss alongside his brother Jamie.
One fan criticized, saying, “I knew she would prioritize herself instead of giving Andy Murray the send-off he deserved. Shame on you, Emma Raducanu.”
Another expressed disappointment, “That girl – honestly. So self-centered, so out of line, and unfortunately so predictable! Was cheering her on yesterday – never again. Form is temporary but class is permanent.”
A third fan weighed in, “Appalling decision from Emma Raducanu… she has many years of matches ahead of her or a unique chance to play Andy Murray’s last match at Wimbledon. It’s a no-brainer, which I think she is currently lacking.”
However, other supporters rushed to Raducanu’s defense. One fan on X remarked, “We are all disappointed but hope Emma is okay for her singles match.”

And a third commenter added, “As disappointing as it is, I don’t think it’s fair to blame Emma Raducanu for withdrawing from mixed doubles. Playing as the fourth match on Court 1 today, especially with a crucial singles match tomorrow, was never going to be ideal. It’s absolutely the right decision.”
Raducanu announced her decision this afternoon in a statement, saying, “Unfortunately, I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so I have made the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight. I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy, but I have to prioritize taking care of my body.”
She is scheduled to play her fourth-round singles match on Sunday against Lulu Sun. Raducanu remains cautious about pushing herself too hard, having undergone surgery on both wrists and one ankle last year, which kept her sidelined for eight months.

After his match on Thursday, Murray reiterated his commitment to retirement, stating, “I know that it’s time now. I’m ready for that.”
He will embark on a family holiday before focusing on his final competitive appearance at the Olympics in Paris, where he is set to compete in both singles and doubles with Dan Evans.
Meanwhile, Raducanu faces the challenge of ensuring her Wimbledon campaign remains on track, as the 21-year-old is now considered a strong contender to reach at least the quarter-finals.
There seems to be no major cause for concern, as Raducanu was seen practicing at the All England Club on Saturday, although she appeared uncomfortable in some photos.
The former US Open champion was once again spotted in an England shirt ahead of the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, which will take place in Germany at 5pm.
