At a tender age of 2, Dean experienced the departure of his dad, Roger Tanaka, who never returned. A year later, Dean’s mother found love again and married director Christopher Cain. In a transformative turn of events, Christopher legally adopted Dean and his brother, leading to Dean adopting his new surname as a symbol of their new familial bond.
When Dean entered fatherhood himself, he embraced the role with unwavering commitment. Welcoming a son with his then-girlfriend, Samantha Torres, a former model and Playboy mate, Dean made a solemn vow to defy the example set by his biological father. Regrettably, Dean and Samantha’s relationship came to an end shortly after their son’s arrival, leading to a custody battle. Despite the challenges, Dean emerged as the sole custodian of Christopher, assuming full responsibility for his upbringing.

It wasn’t until Christopher turned 18 that Dean started working on and off the screen again. “I’m there, I’m a very present father, and I would never do it otherwise. I’m blessed to be able to have the ability to do so many different things and yet still be a father first,” he said.
The two are spending plenty of quality time together and are taking a bunch of trips. Christopher has two half-siblings from his mother, Elijah and Isabelle, who often stop by the Chain household.
“I’d do anything for those two. It can be defined as a broken home, but if you hang out at our house, that’s the last thing you’ll think,” Dean said of his ex’s children. “My best day would be just to wake up, and me and my son have a great day at home,” he added.
