In an article published following an interview with Dr. Rob van Dam, the Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition in Harvard School of Public Health, under the title “Ask the expert: coffee and health”, Dr. Van Dam suggested that drinking up to six cups of coffee everyday was not recorded to cause any risks of death. This result was provided on the basis of a follow up research done on almost 130.000 study volunteers who were followed for 18 to 24 years. No relationship was found between coffee drinking and the increase of health problems, thus it was concluded that coffee consumption has no harmful health consequences.
This result may not be new for coffee consumers as it wouldn’t change their mind about their favorite drink but at least; it is proofed now that coffee drinking is not an unhealthy habit and there is no need to feel guilty. What should be kept in mind is that, for people who have negative effects resulting from coffee consumption that make them feel uncomfortable or stressed or even causes them sleeping disorder or getting tremors, they are obviously drinking too much coffee. The daily six cups according to Dr. Van Dam don’t mean 16 ounces that somebody would get in a big Starbucks, which has about 330 mg of caffeine, on the opposite; it is about an 8-ounce cup with 100 mg of caffeine especially with lower calories than the popular coffeehouse beverages that most of the time exceed their energy intake and that would certainly lead to weight gain which increases the possibility of having severe maladies.
