After it was confirmed that the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit spinoff will not return for a sixth season, the 65-year-old actor took to Instagram to thank fans for their continued support of the NBC series.
“I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to the fans, who not only helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity, but for sticking with him and welcoming him back,” Meloni said in a heartfelt message shared Thursday.

“Law & Order: Organized Crime” will not be returning for a sixth season, Christopher Meloni confirmed in a message shared on Instagram.
The actor became emotional as he reflected on what he called a “good ride” portraying Detective Elliot Stabler.
“I had a great time playing him,” Meloni told his followers. “Thank you. You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of — nearly 17 years.”
Meloni, an Emmy nominee, first took on the role of the beloved detective in 1999 alongside Mariska Hargitay, who plays Captain Olivia Benson.

While Law & Order: SVU continues to thrive — now in its 27th season — Meloni originally exited the series in 2011 before returning in 2021 for recurring guest appearances. His spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime, premiered that same year.
Mariska Hargitay later revealed she was “devastated” by her co-star’s departure. Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast in June 2025, she recalled how sudden the exit felt.
“It happened very quickly, and it was surprising. It was over a negotiation,” she said. “And I tried everything I could to fix it and change it.”

Meloni (pictured above in June 2025) received supportive messages from former co-stars across social media following his emotional post.
Hargitay said Meloni was ultimately “ready to go” and move on to “all these other great shows,” including Happy! and The Handmaid’s Tale.
Reflecting on their long-standing friendship, she shared, “We are just connected. We are so close. It’s like we’ve been through the battle together. We know each other so well. We love each other so much. We respect each other so much.”
The 62-year-old actress also showed public support by leaving a comment on Meloni’s Instagram post on Thursday.
