Talk show host Bill Maher fired back at President Donald Trump’s explosive 1,318-word social media tirade, in which the president branded him a “total loser,” by hilariously comparing having dinner with Trump to dating pop superstar Taylor Swift.
“I mean, eating with Trump is like dating Taylor Swift. It’s a lot of laughs at the time, but later on, they’re tearing you a new a–hole,” the Real Time with Bill Maher host joked during Friday night’s HBO broadcast, referencing Swift’s reputation for writing songs about her former romantic partners.
Maher continued his sharp-tongued response with another celebrity-inspired jab, saying, “He went off on me like Kelly Clarkson in a toy store,” alluding to the recent controversy surrounding the singer’s headline-making encounter at a Brooklyn toy shop.
“Real Time” host Bill Maher fired back at President Donald Trump after the president unleashed a lengthy, 1,300-word Truth Social rant criticizing the comedian following their White House dinner.
Maher attended the Oct. 15 dinner at the White House alongside musician Kid Rock and ESPN sports commentator Stephen A. Smith.
Last Sunday, Trump took aim at the HBO host in a lengthy Truth Social post, writing: “Let’s talk about this COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER, Bill Maher. He’s got a Low Rated Show on equally Low Rated HBO, which was once, long ago, a Network of Quality and Excitement — But that’s all gone. It’s not ‘HOT’ anymore!”
During Friday night’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the comedian addressed the president’s criticism while explaining why he had agreed to meet with Trump in the first place.
“Look, I don’t want it to be this way. The whole point of having these dinners was talk, disagree, but listen, which he does in person, but don’t hate each other. And then I go back to my job here and then the heartaches begin,” Maher said.
At one point during the broadcast, Maher was handed a printed copy of Trump’s lengthy Truth Social post, prompting him to go through the president’s remarks and “address a few of the allegations” one by one.
President Donald Trump branded Bill Maher a “loser” and leveled several other criticisms at the HBO comedian, despite having hosted him twice for dinner at the White House.
Addressing the president’s lengthy Truth Social post on Real Time with Bill Maher, the late-night host responded with his trademark sarcasm.
“It begins, ‘Let’s talk about the complete and total loser Bill Maher.’ You got me there. I’ll own that,” Maher joked.
The comedian then challenged Trump’s claim that he had opposed efforts to eliminate Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities.
“What pisses me off,” Maher said, is that Trump “doesn’t even notice what I say.”
In his Truth Social post, Trump had written that Maher “doesn’t think it was a good thing to take the Nuclear Weapon away from Iran, which shows you that he is not very smart.”
To dispute the president’s accusation, Real Time aired clips showing Maher expressing agreement with Trump’s position on the issue.
Maher also pushed back against Trump’s allegation that the comedian frequently calls him, insisting that the president is actually the one who initiates their phone conversations.
“Page two, he talks about how I call him incessantly. I’ve never called you, you call me. I’d be afraid to call you. You’re the president. I think you’re too busy. Well, plainly not,” Maher quipped.
Bill Maher continued his response to President Donald Trump’s lengthy Truth Social attack by comparing the experience of dining at the White House to dating pop superstar Taylor Swift.
The Real Time host poked fun at the sheer length of Trump’s 1,318-word social media post, describing it as the “Longest ever — kind of a flex.”
Maher also joked about the unusual aftermath of sharing a meal with the president.
“Dining at the White House is the opposite of the Cheesecake Factory. After you leave, they review you,” the comedian quipped.
Trump’s criticism appeared to follow remarks Maher made during his Oct. 23 episode, when he joked about the president’s habit of complimenting other men’s physical appearances.
“It’s just a little odd that Trump keeps gushing about men’s bodies, and how handsome they are, and their jawlines, and their asses, their physiques,” Maher said during the monologue.
The HBO host then turned the joke on himself, expressing mock disappointment that Trump had not offered him similar praise during their lengthy White House dinner.
“I’m a little hurt. I was there for dinner for four hours last week, and not a peep. Nothing,” Maher added.
