Paul Reubens Leaves Heartfelt Apology and Last Message to Fans Prior to Passing

Accompanying a touching portrait of the beloved star, Paul Reubens, known for his iconic role as Pee-Wee Herman, left a heartfelt message for his fans before his departure. He expressed remorse for keeping his health battle a secret over the last six years, acknowledging the immense love and respect he felt from friends, fans, and supporters throughout his journey. Paul Reubens shared his profound affection for his audience and the joy he experienced in creating art for them.

According to TMZ, Paul Reubens underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in 2017, but the specific type of cancer he had been facing remains undisclosed.

Born on August 27, 1952, in Peekskill, New York, Paul Reubens captivated audiences of all ages with his portrayal of the whimsical character, Pee-Wee Herman. With his signature red bow tie, gray suit, and slick black hair, Pee-Wee embodied innocence and playfulness. The character originated during Paul Reubens’ time with the comedy improvisation group, The Groundlings, where he honed the eccentric persona. Pee-Wee Herman’s popularity soared, leading to numerous television appearances, most notably “The Pee-Wee Herman Show,” which debuted as a live stage performance in 1981.

In 1985, the endearing character Pee-Wee Herman made his grand cinematic entrance with “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” Directed by Tim Burton, the film surpassed all expectations, captivating a wide audience and solidifying Paul Reubens’ reputation as a gifted comedic actor. With Pee-Wee’s childlike enthusiasm, quirky charm, and impeccable comic timing, Reubens won the hearts of viewers, leading to remarkable box office success—earning $45 million while costing just $6 million to produce.

The popularity of Pee-Wee soared even higher when “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse” hit television screens from 1986 to 1990. The show unveiled Pee-Wee’s imaginative world, filled with zany characters, talking furniture, and valuable life lessons for young audiences. “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse” garnered critical acclaim and numerous Emmy Awards, showcasing Reubens’ unparalleled ability to connect with viewers of all ages.

However, in 1991, Reubens faced a significant setback with his arrest for indecent exposure in an adult movie theater. The incident shook the entertainment industry and put his career in jeopardy. Undeterred by adversity, Reubens gradually distanced himself from the Pee-Wee persona, focusing on other creative endeavors.

After a period of relative seclusion, Reubens staged a triumphant comeback in the late 1990s and 2000s. He displayed his versatility as an actor, taking on diverse roles in films like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1992), Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns,” “Matilda,” “Dunston Checks In,” and “Blow.” Moreover, Reubens graced television screens, showcasing his talent on shows such as “Murphy Brown,” “30 Rock,” “Ally McBeal,” and “Everybody Loves Raymond.” His enduring presence in the entertainment world proved that his talent and appeal transcended the iconic Pee-Wee Herman character.

Reubens again faced trouble with the law in 2002 when police raided his home to find a collection of obscene materials. Reubens handed himself in and was charged with misdemeanor possession of obscene material improperly depicting underage children. However, this was dropped in exchange for Reubens’s guilty plea to a lesser misdemeanor obscenity charge.

Reubens staunchly defended himself, saying the materials were part of a vintage collection. He told NBC News:

“I don’t want anyone for one second to think that I am titillated by images of children. It’s not me. You can say lots of things about me. And you might. The public may think I’m weird. They may think I’m crazy or anything that anyone wants to think about me. That’s all fine. As long as one of the things you’re not thinking about me is that I’m a pedophile. Because that’s not true.”

Despite his broader repertoire, fans remained eager to see him reprise Pee-Wee Herman. In 2010, Reubens revived the beloved character with “The Pee-Wee Herman Show” on Broadway, bringing joy to longtime fans and a new generation alike. His appeal carried on into television again when the Netflix film, “Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday,” produced by the acclaimed filmmaker Judd Apatow, was released in 2015 to rave reviews. The film also starred Joe Manganiello and was Reubens’s last foray as Pee-Wee before his passing.

His devotion to the role of Pee-Wee Herman and commitment to spreading laughter earned Reubens a devoted fan base and secured his place in entertainment history. His portrayal of Pee-Wee transcended generations, capturing hearts young and old, and his passing has since led to an outpouring of tributes from friends, family and those in the entertainment industry who cherished him over the years.
