Rebecca Gayheart opened up about the heartbreaking deterioration of her late husband, Eric Dane, during the final week leading up to his death from ALS on February 19.

Speaking to Today.com on Tuesday, Gayheart admitted she never imagined that her husband’s final hospital stay would mark the end of his life.

“I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week,” she shared. “And nor did my daughters. It really took a few days for us to understand the gravity of what that last trip to the hospital meant.”

Gayheart explained that throughout Dane’s struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), repeated hospital visits had become familiar to the family, making it difficult to recognize just how serious his condition had become.

“He had gone to the hospital so many times before, and they would patch him up, so to speak, and he would come home,” she recalled.

Initially, the family believed Dane would recover and return home as he had after previous hospital visits.

“I said, ‘Listen, I’ll be back. I have a dinner. I’m going to this event,’” she recalled.

But by the actor’s third day in the hospital, Gayheart and their daughters, Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, began to realize that his condition was far more serious than they had anticipated.

“Everything shifted. Just the tone of when the doctors were talking to us, and some of the information we were given,” Gayheart recalled, describing the unsettling change in the medical team’s conversations with the family.

The model explained that the “Grey’s Anatomy” alum also recognized that his condition was taking a serious turn, despite his increasing difficulty communicating.

“He was fully aware it was shifting, and he was still communicating with us. Not well verbally, but I could understand him most of the time. The kids could most of the time, his closest friends,” she shared.

Despite his declining health, Gayheart said Dane remained involved in making important decisions about his final days.

“But I remember the moment Eric decided to make some choices, and he did. … He was in control of the way he was going to leave,” she explained.

Determined to surround the “Euphoria” star with love and comfort, Gayheart and their daughters spent nights together in his hospital room, holding family sleepovers to remain close to him during his final days.

Gayheart revealed that the “Euphoria” star, pictured in July 2025, remained in control of the decisions surrounding his final days.

“The girls and I just camped out there with him, and we had our family sleepovers,” she recalled. “And we brought in those little candles that aren’t real candles. They have batteries. And we played his favorite music, and we tried to make it as nice as you can be in the hospital room.”

Dane died on February 19 at the age of 53, less than a year after publicly revealing his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

According to his death certificate, obtained by People in March, the actor’s official cause of death was respiratory failure.

Despite witnessing her husband’s worsening condition and spending his final days by his side, Gayheart admitted she was emotionally unprepared to say goodbye to her husband of 22 years.

Gayheart, pictured with Dane in 2013, admitted to Today.com that nothing could have prepared her for the heartbreaking reality of losing her husband.

“A lot of people will say, ‘Well, at least you knew, and you could have those last conversations,’” she explained. “But we didn’t know, because there is no road map. No one can tell you what the journey looks like because it’s so different for every patient.”

She also reflected on the emotional toll Dane’s deteriorating physical health took on their family, particularly their two daughters.

“He was becoming more alive mentally, but losing all of his physical abilities. And for the girls, that was really hard to watch as well. But overall, it’s a blur, because it was just so overwhelming,” Gayheart shared.

During her appearance, Gayheart also discussed Dane’s posthumously released memoir, “My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments.”

In the deeply personal book, which was released Tuesday, Dane opened up about the earliest warning signs of ALS, revealing that he first noticed something was wrong when he unexpectedly struggled to use chopsticks during a family dinner.

The late actor also revealed that Gayheart was the first person he confided in after receiving his devastating diagnosis.

Despite their separation, Gayheart immediately reassured Dane that he would not face the disease alone.

“I’m here, we’ll fight this together, I’m not going anywhere,” she told him.

Rebecca Gayheart filed for divorce from Eric Dane in February 2018 but later withdrew her petition amid the actor’s battle with ALS.

The couple married in a surprise Las Vegas ceremony in 2004 and went on to welcome two daughters, Billie in 2010 and Georgia in 2011.

After 14 years of marriage, the “Scream 2” actress filed to end their relationship in February 2018. However, she ultimately withdrew the divorce petition in November 2025 as Dane struggled with his deteriorating health following his ALS diagnosis.
