Selena Gomez has opened up about how years of nicotine vaping have permanently affected her voice.

“I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” the singer explained in a video shared on Instagram Stories on Sunday. “I vaped nicotine a lot, and nicotine is so hard to quit.”

Reflecting on her experience, Gomez warned others against taking up vaping, emphasizing that the habit and its potential consequences are “just not worth it.”

“I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” Gomez admitted. “I vaped nicotine a lot, and nicotine is so hard to quit.”

The singer acknowledged that her vaping habit had noticeably affected the way she sounds, while brushing off any criticism of her voice.

“It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice. So if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it,” she said with a laugh.

Despite the lasting effects, Gomez expressed pride in having quit vaping and shared her determination to stay nicotine-free.

“But I am really excited because I stopped [vaping] and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too,” she added.

This isn’t the first time the 34-year-old singer has spoken publicly about the noticeable changes in her voice.

“It’s so stupid and it’s changed my voice,” Gomez admitted, before sharing that she has since managed to quit vaping.

However, the singer previously offered a different explanation for her changing voice. In December 2025, she attributed the noticeable difference to swelling in her throat.

“I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all. That’s good,” she explained during an Instagram Live session at the time.

Gomez has long been open about her health challenges, particularly her ongoing battle with lupus, an autoimmune disease.

The pop star has been open about living with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation throughout the body.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition can affect several parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.

Gomez has also spoken candidly about the weight fluctuations she has experienced as a result of medications used to manage her condition.

“My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications,” the actress revealed during a 2023 episode of the Apple TV+ series “Dear…”

Gomez also reflected on the public criticism she faced over changes in her appearance, revealing that her lupus-related weight gain made her a target of body-shaming.

“And obviously, people just ran with it … It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus,” she recalled.

The former Disney Channel star has also spoken openly about living with bipolar disorder and how she and her husband, Benny Blanco, navigate her mental health challenges together.

During a March appearance on Blanco’s “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, Gomez praised her husband’s patience and understanding when she experiences emotional difficulties.

“It is helpful to have a partner that will understand where maybe the temperature is at, and meet you where you are, and then you kind of gradually understand what’s happening,” she shared.
