Andrew Garfield faced criticism on X after taking aim at “billionaires” while discussing his new movie, “The Uprising,” during a Los Angeles film screening Thursday.
Garfield appeared alongside director Paul Greengrass for a Q&A about the historical action drama, which centers on England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt.
Set in the aftermath of the Black Death, the film follows struggling commoners pushed to their limits by heavy taxes imposed under King Richard II’s government to help finance the Hundred Years’ War.
During the discussion, an audience member asked Garfield what he hoped viewers would take away from the movie.
“What’s your dream takeaway for people in the audience when they go home?” the attendee asked. “What are you hoping for?”
“Well, first I hope they come and see it, first thing,” Garfield replied. “Secondly, I hope it’s galvanizing. I hope there’s some awakening that people feel … that we all feel like our own struggles are being reflected in the struggles of these characters from a distant time and place and that it could be directive.”
Garfield then added a pointed message for wealthy viewers.
“And I hope that if any billionaires watch it, they’re scared sh–less,” he said.

His comments quickly prompted backlash online, with some critics pointing to the considerable wealth Garfield has amassed during his successful acting career.
“When I first heard they were making a period film about Wat Tyler, I was pretty excited. But the more Andrew Garfield talks, the more it sounds like it’s just going to be socialist garbage,” wrote Rick Davis, an associate pastor at Providence Church in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Garfield portrays a fictional lead character named Ploughman in the film, while actor Cosmo Jarvis plays Wat Tyler, the historical rebel leader who played a prominent role in England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt.
Spencer Pratt, a former candidate for Los Angeles mayor, also weighed in, pointing to what he described as the irony of Garfield’s remarks.
Garfield’s remarks quickly drew backlash online, with critics pointing to the considerable wealth the actor has accumulated over the course of his Hollywood career.
“You mean…like the billionaires who greenlight your movies and stroke all your multi-million dollar paychecks? Or they good?” Spencer Pratt wrote. He followed up by adding, “Ironically, Garfield just got paid like $5M for playing billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial.”
Substack columnist John William Sherrod also criticized the actor’s comments.
“Hilarious that world-famous, multi, multi millionaire Andrew Garfield is cosplaying as a put upon member of the working class,” Sherrod posted.
Noam Blum, chief technology officer at Tablet Magazine, similarly weighed in, writing, “More billionaires were involved in making this than will probably ever watch it.”
Garfield has appeared in a number of major Hollywood films, including “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Hacksaw Ridge” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
Neither Garfield nor Greengrass responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
