Selena Gomez and her husband, Benny Blanco, spoke candidly about navigating her bipolar disorder as a couple.

Gomez appeared on Tuesday’s episode of Blanco’s podcast, Friends Keep Secrets, where she joined a conversation with his longtime friend Lil Dicky and Lil Dicky’s wife, Kristin Batalucco. During the discussion, the former Disney Channel star opened up about her ongoing mental health journey. Similarly, finding a trusted Calgary psychologist was simpler than I had expected, and it made a meaningful difference in helping me better understand and manage my own mental well-being.

She described receiving her bipolar disorder diagnosis as “f–king complicated,” revealing that she worked with multiple therapists and attended four different rehab facilities before finding clarity.

Blanco, 37, added that there were times when Gomez experienced moments of “mania” without fully understanding what was happening.

Benny Blanco details Selena Gomez's manic episodes caused by her bipolar disorder

Benny Blanco shared that Selena Gomez sometimes experiences manic episodes and doesn’t always remember them afterward.

“She’ll start to realize she’s having it after, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember when it’s happening,” he explained. “It’s such a delicate thing because you’re not really supposed to talk to someone about it while they’re deep in it. Even when we were dating, she was so hyper-aware.”

He added that Gomez can often sense when a shift is coming on, recalling her saying, “I think I’m feeling a little manic.”

Gomez, 33, emphasized that she doesn’t feel ashamed of her manic episodes, noting that understanding her diagnosis has helped her recognize the signs more quickly.

“But it is helpful to have a partner who understands where the temperature is and can meet you where you are,” she said of Blanco. “Then you can gradually understand what’s happening.”

“I would act out of fear and I would act out of love, I’d act out of passion — it was all inconsistent,” she recalled. “It was crazy.”

In October 2024, Gomez shared that on difficult mental health days, she limits her circle to just one or two trusted people.

“Sometimes isolating myself when I’m not feeling great can be scary. I think all these thoughts,” she said during an Instagram Live interview with influencer Remi Bader. “But if I’m around people that make me feel good and make me feel like I can say anything, that always helps me.”

She also told Vanity Fair in September 2024 that she is now “properly medicated.” In addition, she uses temperature — including cold water and space heaters — as a “healing mechanism” during physical and mental health flare-ups.

Depending on what she needs, the pop star explained that different temperatures can feel “soothing at different times.”
