A mother has been convicted of fatally stabbing her 6-year-old son before setting her Minnesota home on fire, trapping his 5-year-old brother inside.
Jennifer Marie Stately, 37, was found guilty on February 26, just two and a half weeks into her trial, for the deaths of her sons Remi, 6, and Tristan, 5, which occurred on March 15, 2024.
According to court records, Stately stabbed Remi in the chest and then ignited multiple fires in her Red Lake Nation, Minnesota, residence using lighter fluid and gasoline. Fires were set near the exits, preventing Tristan from escaping the blaze.

Jennifer Marie Stately was convicted of fatally stabbing her 6-year-old son and setting her Minnesota home ablaze, leaving his 5-year-old brother trapped inside.

Tristan, the younger boy, died from smoke inhalation. Authorities described Stately’s actions as “horrific and unthinkable.” Rick Evanchec, FBI special agent in charge, said the boys “had no chance at survival while in the care of the one person who should have kept them safe.”
Family members described Tristan in an obituary as an “outgoing, spirited little boy.” Stately reportedly fled the home with her 3-year-old son, Ethan. Prosecutors noted that Ethan had sores and scabs on his feet, making it difficult for him to stand, according to Law and Crime.

Remi, 6, was fatally stabbed in the chest before his mother, Jennifer Marie Stately, set their Minnesota home ablaze. An Amber Alert was issued but later canceled after a motorist spotted Stately roughly 150 miles south of her home.
Stately initially faced charges including child neglect, malicious punishment, torture, and assault. These charges were dropped in April 2024 because the Red Lake Reservation falls outside state court jurisdiction. She was later indicted on May 6, 2024, for murder and arson.

Tristan, 5, died from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to court records. Jennifer Marie Stately was found guilty on five counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson. Law enforcement has welcomed the verdict.
“We all witnessed the devastating aftermath of Jennifer Stately’s horrific and unthinkable actions that night,” said Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. “We hope that holding her accountable for her crimes will provide some sense of justice for the family and the entire Red Lake community, who are forever impacted by the loss of these two young boys.”
In Minnesota, a first-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of life in prison. Stately has not yet been sentenced.
