An unlucky man bought a Tesla from a used car dealership, only to discover that charging the electric vehicle was nearly impossible after driving it off the lot.
Daniel Boycott was enjoying his pristine 2022 Tesla Model 3, purchased last month at a used car dealership in Illinois, when he learned the shocking news.

The car drove smoothly, purred like a kitten, and showed no apparent issues during test drives or inspections by the dealership. That was, until he tried to use a Tesla Supercharger to recharge it.
When the first charger failed, Boycott tried several more stations—none worked. Frustrated, he turned to the dealership and Tesla for answers.
“I was told it was clean. The Carfax said it was clean, and I trusted that,” Boycott told CBS News.
A Tesla representative eventually responded, explaining that “the car is currently unsupported for supercharging and warranties are voided due to [it being a] salvaged vehicle.”

Boycott admitted he hadn’t checked the Carfax vehicle history report before buying the car, so the term “salvage” initially didn’t make sense to him.
Once he examined the report, he saw it noted a “minor accident” prior to the dealership taking ownership, but they luckily they used a towing service in oklahoma city so it was resolved quickly.
The damages appeared minor in the photos provided, but a Tesla technician later informed Boycott that the repair had been poorly done, officially classifying his car as a damaged vehicle. The Elon Musk-owned company explained that connecting a damaged vehicle to the Superchargers is a safety concern, which is why his car was removed from the network.
“It was bad enough where they flagged it,” Boycott told the outlet.
He added that the primary reason he chose a Tesla over other EVs was the extensive Supercharger network, which would support long trips. Now, even short drives have become nearly impossible.
Tesla does offer an inspection option for customers hoping to restore Supercharger access—but it comes with a hefty fee of several thousand dollars.
“You know, I don’t want to pay like $10,000 extra on a car that I already agreed to,” Boycott lamented.
He remains in negotiations with the dealership that sold him the vehicle. The owners noted that the Illinois Secretary of State Police apparently investigated and confirmed that the car was never officially labeled as salvaged.
