A Massachusetts man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his pregnant girlfriend to death and burying her body in his grandmother’s yard — a killing she reportedly predicted in a chilling text to her family.
Gregory Groom, 22, was arraigned Wednesday in Taunton District Court, just a day after authorities discovered the body of 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro buried behind a shed on the Rehoboth property where Groom lives with his grandparents, according to WCVB.
Monteiro, who was 11 weeks pregnant, was last heard from on August 7 — the same day she sent an alarming message to her sister claiming that Groom had attacked her.
“She threw me on the ground, pulled my hair, and strangled me,” she wrote. “My phone’s at 4 percent. If I die, it was Greg.”
The following day, Groom called police to report Monteiro missing, claiming she had been at his house seeking a place to stay but left after an argument.
However, when police informed him that they planned to search his grandparents’ property, Groom reportedly broke down and confessed to the crime.
Prosecutors say he admitted to stabbing Monteiro with a kitchen knife, then dragging her body into the woods and burying it approximately five feet underground.
Her body was ultimately discovered about 20 yards from where the alleged fight took place.
Despite his reported confession, Groom has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
It remains unclear whether the child Monteiro was carrying was Groom’s.
“She was so loving and so caring, and I love her so much. My daughter was her best friend,” family friend Kira Schofield told WCVB.
The victim’s sister, Faith Monteiro, said she is still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
“I lost my sister, and I will never see her again, say anything to her, or get the chance to say goodbye or tell her that I love her,” Faith said.
