Talk is heating up about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s potential plans for 2028 after she successfully backed underdog socialist Zohran Mamdani in the intense New York City Democratic mayoral primary.
Many analysts believe the progressive “Squad” member is aiming to advance beyond her House seat—possibly to the Senate or even the presidency—following Mamdani’s surprising victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday night.
“It keeps opening new opportunities,” said Corbin Trent, Ocasio-Cortez’s former spokesperson and author of the America’s Undoing Substack, in an interview with The Post. “It really expands her horizons.”
The representative from the Bronx and Queens was among the most prominent Democrats to endorse Zohran Mamdani in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary.
The 35-year-old congresswoman representing the Bronx and Queens was arguably the most high-profile Democrat to endorse Mamdani, 33, at a time when he was largely viewed as the underdog in the race.
Cuomo, a three-time elected Democrat, had the support of establishment figures like South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn and former President Bill Clinton—but still trailed Mamdani by 7 points in the ranked-choice voting contest.
“You can always count on her being underestimated, that’s for sure,” Trent said of AOC.
Mamdani’s surprising win “gives her a bit of a national victory and more attention for backing the right candidate and moving in the right direction,” he added.
Other Democratic operatives and aides agreed that Ocasio-Cortez would see the socialist’s rise as confirmation that her grassroots, progressive approach can succeed in a future presidential race.
However, some warned that Cuomo’s loss was more about his own damaged reputation.
“He had the consultants, lobbyists, and ruthless operatives—and then there’s his own record,” one Democratic operative noted. “There’s really nothing to like.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is facing widespread speculation regarding her plans for 2028.
Nearly seven years ago, Ocasio-Cortez had a breakthrough of her own when she defeated longtime House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) in the 2018 primary.
The key question now is whether she will aim for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) seat or set her sights on the presidency a decade after her rapid ascent from bartender to congresswoman.
One Democratic operative told The Post that AOC is still more likely to challenge Schumer in the 2028 primary.
However, another source suggested that challenging Schumer would pale in comparison to “holding [presidential] rallies across the country,” similar to Ocasio-Cortez’s recent “Fight Oligarchy” events with socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
“The polls show she would beat Schumer in a primary, and with her and Bernie touring upstate New York, I think you’d see even more momentum than expected,” Trent said about her potential.
“People know they’re being taken advantage of. When you go out there and deliver that message, it really resonates,” he added, referring to Mamdani’s platform focused on affordability
Cuomo, a three-time elected Democrat, received support from establishment party figures but still trailed Mamdani by 7 points in the ranked-choice voting race.
A third Democratic aide suggested that the party’s left wing will leverage Mamdani’s victory to argue that AOC could be a strong contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
At the same time, the democratic socialist’s win is energizing Republicans, who now have plenty of “fodder” — including Mamdani’s ambitious proposals for government-run grocery stores and his controversial anti-police and anti-Israel statements.
According to a fourth party insider, these issues will present a difficult challenge for Democrats to “navigate” ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The Democrat Party should stop wasting time, just crown AOC the 2028 nominee now!
She’s a foreign policy mastermind, her legislative wins are too many to count, and she clearly speaks for Democrat leadership.

As Cuomo conceded to Mamdani, Ocasio-Cortez’s chances of securing the Democratic nomination in 2028 surged dramatically.
The Democratic primary is widely viewed as open, with the party still trying to recover from its setbacks in 2024.
“The Democratic Party should stop wasting time and just crown AOC the 2028 nominee now! She’s a foreign policy expert, has countless legislative achievements, and clearly represents Democratic leadership,” Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) tweeted after Mamdani’s win, assuring followers his account wasn’t hacked.
“This is the candidate who can unite climate activists, those who see economics as a lifestyle, and believers in global citizenship. Run AOC, Run!”
If she runs and wins the next presidential election, she would become both the first female and the youngest person in U.S. history to hold the office.
There’s also a chance AOC could challenge Schumer in 2028, when the five-term senator faces re-election.
Schumer faced backlash from progressives in March after he chose not to block a GOP bill aimed at avoiding a partial government shutdown.
Ocasio-Cortez was one of the leading voices advocating for a shutdown showdown. Several polls have since shown her leading Schumer, should she decide to run against him.
She chose not to challenge Schumer in 2022, and the minority leader has yet to announce whether he will seek re-election in 2028.
Schumer congratulated Mamdani on his victory Wednesday but, unlike Ocasio-Cortez, has not fully endorsed the former rapper and two-term state assemblyman as he prepares for a general election against Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent.
Many top GOP figures in New York believe Schumer and Ocasio-Cortez are on a collision course.
“Tonight’s biggest winner is [Ocasio-Cortez]. [Schumer] is finished in a Democratic primary in 2028,” Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) remarked Tuesday evening, reiterating his longtime prediction.
Trent, who believes Mamdani’s victory likely isn’t a major factor in AOC’s 2028 plans, described his former boss as the “Michael Jordan” of political messaging.
“There’s no doubt about that,” he said, praising her exceptional communication skills.
