King Charles has maintained a strong bond with his son and daughter-in-law, reportedly deepening his connection with the Princess of Wales following their shared battles with cancer.
However, despite this close relationship, many royal observers remain unaware of Charles’ significant involvement in the royal wedding over a decade ago. As the father of the groom, then-Prince Charles played a pivotal role in orchestrating the 2011 Royal wedding, even handpicking the wedding music.
Charles drew upon his expertise in classical music when selecting the wedding music, as he disclosed to Alan Titchmarsh during a 2020 interview on Classic FM.
He remarked, “I enjoy curating diverse and hopefully captivating pieces of music for special occasions, especially weddings when there’s interest. I’m grateful my eldest son was open to my suggestions and embraced them for their wedding.”
Throughout the years, King Charles has fostered a strong bond with his son, Prince William, and his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton. His involvement in their 2011 wedding was particularly significant.
Prince Charles, serving as the father of the groom, played a crucial role in the 2011 Royal wedding. However, he exceeded expectations by personally selecting certain pieces of music for the occasion, going beyond his traditional role.
At William and Kate’s ceremony in Westminster Abbey, guests were greeted by the majestic sounds of Johann Sebastian Bach’s organ music and orchestral compositions by Edward Elgar, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, among others.
In a touching tribute to Charles and Camilla, then-Duchess of Cornwall, the couple selected “Farewell to Stromness,” “Touch Her Soft Lips and Part,” and “Romance for String Orchestra Op. 11,” echoing the music played at their 2005 wedding.
Reflecting on his music choices, Charles expressed his hope that they brought joy to attendees, admitting his own enjoyment of the selections. His passion for classical music, inherited from the Queen Mother, was nurtured during visits to Covent Garden at a young age, particularly a memorable experience seeing the Bolshoi Ballet perform in 1956, which left an indelible mark on him.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding, a highlight of 2011, garnered immense attention and was commemorated with a national holiday, drawing approximately 26 million viewers. Surpassing these ratings were Princess Diana and Charles’ wedding thirty years prior, which attracted 28.4 million viewers.
Following their wedding ceremony in 2011, the newlyweds embarked on a horse-drawn carriage procession to Buckingham Palace, where they were warmly greeted by crowds lining the streets. Later, they joined the late Queen and other members of the Royal Family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to greet the public.
Since then, Prince William assumed the title of Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus, while Kate became Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge.
As they step into the roles of Prince and Princess of Wales, their connection with the Prince’s father has deepened, particularly in light of their recent cancer diagnoses earlier this year.
Reportedly, the Princess of Wales felt encouraged to disclose her diagnosis following the positive response to the King’s announcement six weeks prior. This shared experience has further solidified their bond, marking a significant moment in their relationship thirteen years after Kate’s formal induction into the Royal Family.
In January, both senior royals underwent procedures at the London Clinic, receiving their diagnoses in February. Kate chose to delay sharing her diagnosis until a month later to inform her and William’s children at an appropriate time.
In 2020, Kate and Charles visited a medical rehabilitation center in Loughborough.
Mr. Cole, a former BBC television royal correspondent, remarked, “Kate has formed a close bond with the King, who affectionately refers to her as ‘my beloved daughter-in-law.’ Consequently, she was acutely aware of the public’s reaction to the King’s cancer revelation and its impact on him.”
He continued, “The King was among the select few to have a glimpse of the young woman, seated serenely on a bench in her Breton sweater and denim, surrounded by blooming daffodils, a timeless emblem of rejuvenation and new beginnings.”
Charles and Camilla have openly expressed their love and support for Kate, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis as the family navigates this challenging time.
The 75-year-old monarch holds a deep affection for the princess, who has been a part of Prince Charles’s life for over two decades.
Despite their shared interests in art, gardening, and the outdoors, Charles and Kate’s connection has been overshadowed by their shared experience of cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatment.
The King resumed his duties and was depicted in a series of photographs released by Buckingham Palace in March.
