Actress Joan Van Ark has enjoyed a lengthy and highly successful career in Hollywood, but it was her portrayal of Valene Ewing in the primetime soap opera Knots Landing that propelled her to fame and solidified her position in the film industry.
Born on June 16, 1943, in New York City, Joan was raised by parents with no ties to television, yet she always felt drawn to the world of entertainment. Beginning her performance journey at a young age, Joan’s path intersected with actress Julie Harris during a show in Denver, a meeting that would significantly shape her future. Encouraged by Harris, Joan pursued studies at the esteemed Yale Drama School, with Harris’s assistance securing her a scholarship, a rare opportunity for women at the time.
Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Joan recounted, “She [Harris] wrote to the dean and asked him to meet me. Long story short, my parents drove me to New Haven, Connecticut, to meet the dean, who gave me a scholarship. It was meant to be.”
After dedicating herself to the theater for several years, Joan transitioned to television, showcasing her talent in various series such as “Temperature’s Rising,” “Spider-Woman,” “Days of Our Lives,” and even making a guest appearance on “Bonanza.” However, it was in 1978 when she landed a pivotal role as Valene Ewing on “Dallas,” which would become one of the most significant roles of her career.
As “Dallas” gained immense popularity, the network decided to create a spin-off titled “Knots Landing,” where Joan reprised her role as Valene Ewing. Interestingly, “Knots Landing” was conceived before “Dallas,” but producers opted to develop “Dallas” first as they aimed for a larger, affluent family-oriented show.
Joan portrayed a central character for 13 seasons on “Knots Landing,” a decision she credits to her husband’s persuasion. Despite juggling commitments to two other projects at the time of the offer, Joan ultimately accepted the role, solidifying her place in television history.
At a pivotal moment in the show’s development, when the character of Valene Ewing’s mother was poised to make her debut, Joan could hardly fathom who would assume the role of her TV mother. To her astonishment and joy, the role was awarded to none other than Julie Harris, someone incredibly dear to her heart.
Recalling the moment in a 1984 interview with Florida Today, Joan shared, “When the producers informed me they had finally cast someone to play my mother, I held my breath. I thought, ‘Oh my God, are they going to say Phyllis Diller or Zsa Zsa Gabor, or who?’ Then they said it was Julie Harris, and I went right through the roof. I couldn’t believe they had chosen her to be my mother. They didn’t even know we were friends.”
After 13 seasons and 327 episodes, Joan departed from “Knots Landing,” and the show was canceled a season later. Although Joan acknowledged feeling responsible for the cancellation, she believed it was time to embrace new challenges.
“I have cherished every moment of the 13 years I spent on that show,” she expressed. “[Knots Landing creator] David Jacobs has been a profound influence in my life, teaching me invaluable lessons. Ted [Shackelford] is my partner in every scene on the show, and personally, he holds a significant place in my heart. The cast and crew are like family – we’ve experienced marriages, deaths, divorces together. Leaving is far more emotional than I anticipated.”
Joan also made appearances in various other series, notably portraying the character Gloria Fisher in “The Young and The Restless.”
In contrast to many celebrities who wed fellow stars, Joan tied the knot with her high school sweetheart, John Marshall. Together, they have a daughter named Vanessa Marshall, who has also ventured into the entertainment industry.
At 78 years old, Joan retains her stunning beauty. With a net worth estimated at around $10 million, her success continues to shine brightly.
