Medical prognosis anticipated only minutes left for their baby’s life. Lisa Hough and her husband, facing an agonizing choice, decided to disconnect life support. In a miraculous turn of events, the child began breathing independently shortly afterward. See comments for the subsequent developments.
Life’s unpredictability is a constant truth. We are often unaware of the obstacles that may come our way, but it’s crucial to remember that we should never cease to fight and believe that things will eventually take a turn for the better.
Chelsea Hough eagerly anticipated the arrival of her baby. Her pregnancy progressed normally, and at 36 weeks, she welcomed a baby boy named Karson Jax Hough.
In the initial moments of his life, Karson appeared to be a perfectly healthy baby. However, suddenly, his heartbeats slowed down and eventually stopped. The medical team attempted skin-to-skin contact with his mother, leading to a brief resumption of his heart, but the improvement was short-lived. The little bundle of joy required a ventilator to support his heart function and aid in his breathing.
“The only way to explain the events is that this adorable baby boy has experienced two extremely rare conditions that are entirely unrelated. One remains unidentified in terms of its cause,” shared Karson’s Nana, Lisa Hough. Doctors suspected that sweet Karson had suffered a hemorrhage in his left temporal lobe and also had nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), a rare genetic disorder causing glycine accumulation in the body’s tissues and fluids.
Survival chances were deemed slim by the medical team. After some time, they recommended the family to disconnect Karson from life support.
The family deliberated carefully and ultimately decided to follow the doctors’ advice, believing it to be in Karson’s best interest. As they gathered in prayer, they were informed they would have only around 10 minutes with Karson before his passing.
After the ventilator was switched off, the precious baby unexpectedly began breathing independently. The medical team was astonished, labeling it as nothing short of a miracle.
“Today, we witnessed a miracle!!” exclaimed Lisa Hough. “We were given 10 minutes after withdrawing intensive care and the ventilator, and were told he would not breathe on his own, expecting his heart to stop within that timeframe… Well, God and Karson had other plans!
“I’m not sure why I ever thought we were so undeserving of a miracle… and I’m not sure how long we have with him, but we have him now. And now we will take,” expressed Lisa.
Upon returning home, Karson flourished. His weight is in a healthy range, and his heart rates remain stable. The levels of Glycine in his body have significantly decreased, and he continues to defy the odds each day.
We extend our heartfelt wishes for a joyful and thriving life for this beautiful baby.
