The reciprocal and profound love between a mother and her son is undeniable. This sentiment was beautifully demonstrated by Matt, the son of Arizona mom Melanie Shaha, who expressed his unwavering love for her in the most heartwarming manner.
In 2003, Melanie started suffering from headaches, leading to medical examinations that unveiled a benign pituitary brain tumor. Situated at the brain’s base, this small pea-sized gland oversees crucial hormones responsible for growth, metabolism, stress management, and reproduction regulation. Recognizing the threat posed by Melanie’s tumor to her pituitary gland, physicians advised her to undergo surgery.
“I’ve had a recurring benign brain tumor, a pituitary tumor, and I underwent surgery twice, first in 2003 and then in 2006,” Melanie revealed to Fox5. “To my surprise, the tumor returned in 2017, leading to radiation therapy that resulted in hair loss. Since Valentine’s Day of 2018, I have been without hair.”
Dealing with hair loss post-radiation treatment can be a challenging experience. The National Cancer Institute notes that hair may regrow within six months after treatment, but high doses of radiation can result in thinner or nonexistent regrowth.
For Melanie, the trials of undergoing treatments were more than sufficient.
“Losing hair makes you stand out, and well-intentioned comments can be heart-wrenching,” she shared with Today Parents. “I don’t mind being unwell, but looking unwell is a different story. I prefer to blend in and not attract attention at the store.”
Her son Matt, naturally empathetic to his mother’s struggles, conceived a unique solution during a family lunch shortly after his college graduation.

Describing the “aha” moment, Matt shared with NewsNation: “It’s quite amusing how it unfolded. It almost started as a joke. My hair had grown a bit longer after college, where we had a strict dress code. I jokingly said, ‘Maybe I’ll grow a wig for you,’ and then it just clicked.”
Given that Matt’s hair closely matched Melanie’s both in color and texture among her six children, the plan seemed almost perfect. Melanie initially had reservations, but Matt lightened the mood with humor.
“I’d tell him, ‘I love your hair,’ and he’d respond, ‘Coming soon to a head near you!’” she recalled.
Over the course of two years, Matt allowed his hair to grow, reaching a length of 12 inches by March 12, 2022. To mark this special moment, Matt invited a few colleagues, including Mercedes Berg, who had been documenting his journey, to his mother’s house to witness the significant cut.
“We were incredibly excited, and when they started cutting, we couldn’t help but cry,” Melanie shared.
Matt expressed no regrets about his decision.
“It’s a no-brainer,” he said. “She gave me the hair in the first place.”
The donated hair was sent to Compassionate Creations, one of the few U.S. companies capable of crafting custom hand-tied wigs using donated hair. What Melanie received was more than just a wig; it was an opportunity to regain a sense of normalcy.
“I’ve lost my eyebrows, lost my eyelashes, I lost my hair, so it’s just been such a tremendous gift to be able to have a more normal appearance, to go places and not stand out because you look unusual, but to fit in and be beautiful,” Melanie expressed to KSAZ-TV.

Both Melanie and Matt were thrilled with the results. “The color is stunning, and we had it cut and styled by a hairdresser,” Melanie remarked. “Matt said it looks great on me.”
Veronica Balch, co-founder of Compassionate Creations, also expressed satisfaction with the outcome, telling Today Parents that the family was “a joy to work with.”
“When someone selflessly shaves their head for a family member, it makes what we do even more special. It sure fills your emotional cup,” she added.
Viewers were deeply moved by Matt’s loving gesture, expressing hopes that their own sons would show similar compassion.
“She did an amazing job raising her son. What a beautiful soul… I pray my boys think of me in this way,” one viewer commented, while another said, “I hope my son turns out this amazing. Absolute unconditional love here.”
“Wow, I love this… What a wonderful gift, it looks amazing. I love it… Long hair is a lot of work!” another viewer remarked. “Simply incredible kindness.”
While Melanie continues to grapple with health issues, she emphasized that she is “living a happy life.” As for Matt, he offered some advice to those considering a similar gesture.
“I think if there’s anyone, and I’m sure that there are, people that are in a similar situation to my mother, seeing what it’s been able to do for her has meant the world. I didn’t expect it to mean as much as it did until it actually happened. And, you know, growing hair, I think if you have the opportunity to grow a full head of hair and donate it, I’d say all power to you.”
