Humanity Restored: Chula Vista, California, Rescued by Teen’s Act of Kindness

In June 2022, the residents of Chula Vista, California, witnessed a heartwarming display of decency when a woman lost her purse outside a Ralph’s. The green bag miraculously reappeared on her doorstep, thanks to a thoughtful teenager instilled with a strong sense of doing what’s right. Amidst a summer marked by rising gas prices and protests, this young graduate from Otay Ranch High School exemplified the enduring kindness of strangers.

Discovering the purse in a shopping cart, the recent graduate took the initiative to find the owner by locating an ID. He then drove to the address listed on the license, surprising Melina Marquez and Eliana Martin, the grateful owner of the purse, with his unexpected act of kindness.

Upon reviewing the Ring camera footage, Marquez expressed her surprise, saying, “I looked into the Ring camera, and I was like, ‘Oh my God. He’s such a young kid.'” Touched by the teenager’s effort to return the purse, Marquez felt compelled to express gratitude. She remarked, “It was nice of him that he drove all the way to my house to drop it off,” and resolved to find a way to reward the deserving teenager. “I was like, ‘We need to find him and just give him a little piece of gratitude.'”

Adrian Rodriguez, modestly downplaying his actions, remarked, “If someone found my belongings, I’d want them to return them to me.” Nonchalantly leaving the purse with his relatives, he considered his small act of kindness a concluded side quest. Little did he anticipate that the story, along with the video capturing Rodriguez on the Marquez’s doorstep, would swiftly become a viral sensation.

Reflecting on his friends’ reactions, Rodriguez shared, “I woke up, and I had a bunch of messages like, ‘Oh, is this you?’ It was weird.” Responding to Marquez’s request for a return visit, both women were astonished by the recovery and return of the purse. Martin expressed her surprise, stating, “It was a surprise for me. Honestly? It was a surprise for me.”

The Chula Vista Facebook community, initially responsible for sharing the Ring doorbell video featuring Rodriguez’s act of returning the purse, took on the mission of locating the young man. Grateful for the community’s efforts, Marquez mentioned, “Thank God, we found him.” In response, Marquez and Martin launched an impromptu fundraiser overnight, aiming to show their appreciation to Rodriguez.

Community members contributed over $1,115 for the teenager by the time he returned to their doorstep. Expressing his gratitude for the generosity, Rodriguez stated, “It feels good. I appreciate it. I really do, everything everybody’s doing.” He credited his mother for instilling the value of doing the right thing, saying, “My mom always told me since I was little to always do the right thing when nobody’s around.” Regarding the use of the funds, Rodriguez mentioned gas money.

Marquez echoed his sentiments, expressing, “Every parent right now hopes that their children grow up to be just like this young gentleman.” She emphasized the significance of the positive news in challenging times, stating, “This is something that we really need. It’s good news, positive news.” While hoping for no more lost purses, the presence of kind strangers like Rodriguez suggests a promising future ahead.
