The proverb advises making lemonade when life gives you lemons. While easier said than done, the reality is that with determination and hard work, nothing is truly impossible.
Cara Brookins discovered herself trapped in an abusive marriage. As a mother of five, recognizing the necessity to rescue her children from the harmful atmosphere they endured, she made the courageous decision to leave her husband. Taking her kids with her, she embarked on an extraordinary journey of constructing a new home entirely from the ground up. How did she achieve this remarkable feat? By independently drafting construction plans and learning essential building skills from instructional YouTube videos, including laying a foundation, erecting walls, running gas lines, and installing plumbing. The story is truly remarkable, isn’t it?
Reflecting on it now, she acknowledges that the entire journey seemed implausible from start to finish. In 2007, when Cara, employed as a computer programmer analyst, initiated the construction of her family’s new home, financial constraints prevented her from purchasing a suitable residence for all her children. It was at this point that she conceived the idea of constructing a home from the ground up.
“At the time, it felt like, ‘If anyone were in our situation, they would do this,'” Cara explained. “However, in hindsight, I recognize how unconventional it sounds; no one else perceived it the way I did.”

After school each day, the children would head to the construction site to contribute to the ongoing process. For the more challenging tasks, the resolute mother enlisted the assistance of a part-time firefighter with building expertise, paying him $25 per hour. “He was a step ahead of us in terms of knowledge,” she reminisced.
On March 31, 2009, the family eventually relocated to Inkwell Manor, a name chosen in homage to Cara’s aspiration of becoming a writer.
“We were dismayed that constructing our own refuge became our optimal choice,” Cara expressed. “It wasn’t something we took pride in, but as it unfolded, it proved to be the most advantageous decision I could have made for myself.”
“If I, a 110-pound computer programmer, can construct an entire house,” she declared, “you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.”
Continuing, she advised, “Choose a singular goal and commit to it. Identify that significant endeavor you wish to pursue, take small steps towards it, and encourage others to join you.”
Isn’t this one of the most incredible stories you’ve heard in a while?
