Animals Serve as Lifelong Companions, Offering Inexplicable Joy and Emotional Support During Difficult Times

Jackie Stalter, an elderly woman diagnosed with multiple myeloma and kidney failure, found solace in the presence of her beloved horses. Despite being surrounded by family in a hospice, there was a void that only her equine companions could fill.

In a November 2023 interview with 9News, Stalter likened horses to people, emphasizing their capacity for love and care. As she battled illness, her family moved her to a hospice to ensure she received the necessary medical care, but the absence of her cherished horses was palpable.

The elderly woman’s insight appears accurate, as outlined in a 2015 article by Deer Creek Structures. Horses, deemed among the most loyal animals, possess impressive memories, often recalling individuals they’ve interacted with over extended periods.

The piece highlights that treating horses positively results in reciprocal affection. For the complete video, be sure to read through to the end of this article.

A chaplain at Advent Health Porter Hospice tirelessly reached out to individuals seeking assistance in arranging for a horse to provide Stalter with a final opportunity to connect with one. Fortunately, Praying Hands Ranch stepped in to make it happen.

The ranch brought forth a chestnut horse, and when the two met, the elderly woman expressed, “If I could, I’d get on him.”

Stalter’s natural affinity with horses became evident as the animal approached her without causing any commotion, and she warmly greeted the mare with an affectionate “oh baby.”

In the video, Stalter was seated in a wheelchair, her daughter visibly moved beside her, recognizing the profound significance of this moment.

“This is probably the last time she’ll get to see a horse, and so that’s really special that we were able to share that with her,” the daughter emotionally remarked.

Stalter’s daughter revealed that organizing this horse encounter had been a heartfelt endeavor since her mother fell ill.

“It just really shows my family that there are kind people out there that care for more than just themselves and like to see other people happy,” the daughter expressed, appreciative of Praying Hands Ranch’s efforts.

Later in the footage, Stalter, who had first ridden a horse at the age of three, was gently pushed along the path as the horse walked beside her, visibly content with the interaction.

“I’m excited to see any horse. Any time I can touch a horse is a gift,” she joyfully exclaimed.
