The anticipation of holding the bundle of joy who is about to change your days and give a whole new meaning to your life is described as one of the best feelings ever. But what happens if the child comes with a certain condition or disease? Do we give up on them, or do we do our best to provide them with the best life possible?
The truth is that different people react differently, just like the parents of beautiful Misha, who was born with an extra chromosome.
Upon learning that their son, Misha, had Down Syndrome, both his mother and father experienced deep sorrow and devastation. Their reactions were largely influenced by their knowledge of the condition, with Misha’s father, Evgeny Anisimov, displaying a strong determination to understand and support his son. In contrast, the baby boy’s mother contemplated giving him up for foster care.
Evgeny never entertained the thought of abandoning his child, regardless of the presence of Down Syndrome. Misha remained his beloved baby boy, and he eagerly embraced the journey of fatherhood with his little one, even though it meant doing so without his wife’s support.
Fortunately, in Europe, including Russia, the home country of Evgeny and Misha, individuals with Down Syndrome are treated as fully integrated members of society. They actively participate in various aspects of community life, attend mainstream schools, and receive education on living independently. This inclusive approach served as a source of added motivation for Evgeny to stand by his son unwaveringly.
“I remember that upon learning that my son has Down Syndrome, I left the hospital and cried, but not for long. Later, I was a little embarrassed by these tears. In my life, after all, nothing had changed, in general. I was still with two arms, with two legs, my professional knowledge had gone nowhere.
“My determination, activity, curiosity, and so on—everything was with me. Everything happened as I planned, my son was born. But the child is special, his life and future destiny are already very significant. And I’m roaring here!” the proud dad told Bored Panda.
Little Misha is too young to grasp his surroundings, but his father is on a mission to raise awareness about the uniqueness of individuals with Down Syndrome. With such a dedicated and profoundly affectionate father, we can be confident that Misha is destined for a wonderful childhood and a fulfilling life. It’s safe to assume that the boy’s mother may eventually regret her choice to not be a part of Misha’s life.
