In 2018, love blossomed, and they exchanged vows, blending their families, each with two children, prior to their marriage. Following their union, the couple aspired to expand their family.

Christie, reflecting on their situation, remarked in a July 30, 2023 interview with Newsweek, “Being in my forties, we understood that fertility treatments might be necessary, so we decided to take it as it came.”

Little did she anticipate the miracle that was to come. In August 2021, Wesley’s former wife gave birth to a baby boy but tragically passed away shortly after due to complications related to COVID-19 and her substance abuse issues. She and her partner had been battling addiction, and she gave birth prematurely at 33 weeks. It was then that the late woman’s sister reached out to Wesley, who had no prior knowledge of her pregnancy.

Upon hearing this heart-wrenching tale, Christie felt an immediate urge to provide a home for the baby. She was determined to keep him out of the foster care system, having experienced it herself when she was placed in care at the age of 15. Interestingly, prior to this revelation, Christie had been having recurring dreams of a blue-eyed, blond-haired baby.

“For three months, I had this dream. Sometimes he was an infant, and other times a toddler,” she recalled.

On Instagram, she shared, “Months before we even knew about him, God placed this baby in my heart.” She also posted a video documenting his growth.

Despite the baby’s biological father’s presence in Texas, the family decided to sell their Ohio home and relocate to Texas in order to foster and ultimately adopt the baby, named Levi. After a 16-month process, which they had hoped would be smoother due to the involvement of Levi’s aunt and half-siblings, they finalized Levi’s adoption in January 2023.

Initially, Christie harbored concerns about forming a bond with the child, but those worries proved unfounded.

“When I walked in and saw this blond-haired, blue-eyed baby, I immediately fell in love. It was a very surreal feeling,” she recounted. “This was my son. Even my daughter, Megan, when she first saw him, said, ‘He has our button nose!'”

Throughout the adoption process, Levi was referred to as “Baby Werts” since his mother had only provided him with a surname.

“On paper, he was a child without a first name, without a birth certificate, and was considered a ward of the state,” Christie shared with the Daily Mail. “Just knowing that he would have a birth certificate and a legal first name was an incredibly emotional moment.”

Christie believed that Levi’s mother had given him the Werts surname as a way of indicating that her ex-husband should care for him.

“She had already experienced having two other children taken away from her, with two more in foster care,” Christie disclosed.

Levi experienced some hand-related issues shortly after birth, but they resolved themselves within a few weeks. Following a social media comment urging them not to forget Levi’s birth mother, the couple shared their intention to talk to Levi about her when he was older.

However, some individuals criticized Christie after the Daily Mail’s Facebook post.

“There are certain things you shouldn’t share on social media, sorry, and this is one of them,” one person expressed.

A second commenter remarked, “So, you adopted your husband’s ex-wife’s baby, and you needed everyone on social media to know about it… 🙄🙄🙄… I mean, the poor baby. He’s going to see this when he grows up, and it’s going to cause him a lot of depression and more… all for social media. Keep this to yourself, ma’am.”

Nevertheless, other comments were overwhelmingly positive, applauding Christie for her compassionate actions.
