Despite being lauded as one of the most exquisite women of her era and beyond, Shields didn’t always perceive her own allure, largely due to early-life criticisms about her appearance from her mother, Teri.
The actress recollected, “My mother would get inebriated and taunt: ‘Why don’t you do something about your weight?’ Consequently, I’ve perpetually carried a notion of having excess weight.” The journey to building self-assurance was fraught with challenges, until she encountered a transformative presence – her husband of 22 years, screenwriter Chris Henchy. He not only altered her perspective but also nurtured her ability to embrace her innate beauty.
“I used to back out of rooms, and he’d say, ‘No, I want to keep you close,'” Shields revealed. “He truly reveled in my femininity and my physique. It was essential for me to have a man who celebrated me.”
Prior to her union with Henchy in 2001, Shields was previously married to tennis icon Andre Agassi, a marriage that spanned only two years.
At the tender age of 15, Shields was discovered by fashion luminary Calvin Klein and made her appearance in commercials. However, even at that early juncture, she grappled with self-consciousness about her appearance.
“Even at 15, I modeled swimwear, yet I didn’t believe I possessed a swimsuit-worthy body,” Shields recollected during a recent interview. “I was a cover girl, not a supermodel. I was more ‘head and shoulders’—focusing on the face, the eyebrows—constantly characterized as ‘athletic,’ ‘not excessively thin,’ ‘not the runway type.’ Such messages subtly seep into your psyche,” concluded the actress.
In recent years, she rekindled her partnership with Calvin Klein, engaging in yet another collaborative campaign. “I was aware that if I didn’t present my finest self, I would feel both ashamed and disappointed,” she recounted. Making a conscious effort, she relinquished beer and wine while committing to three weekly workout sessions. She attested, “I embodied the most exceptional rendition of myself,” although humorously adding, “I was also frequently hungry.”
It might come as a surprise that someone as acclaimed for their beauty and as renowned as Shields would grapple with insecurities. However, at the core, she remains undeniably human, just like all of us.
During a recent conversation with People magazine, she candidly discussed a harrowing incident that occurred approximately three decades ago, not long after her graduation from Princeton University. She recounted being assaulted by a Hollywood executive. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed, “My current anger surpasses what I could muster back then. Fear is an appropriate response in such situations. They instill profound fear without necessarily resorting to violence.”
She holds the belief that she fell prey to such an ordeal because “During those times, people weren’t inclined to believe such narratives. I was under the impression I’d never find work again.” Adding to her distress, she found herself self-blaming. “I kept telling myself, ‘I shouldn’t have gone along with that. Why did I accompany him? I shouldn’t have had that drink at dinner,'” she shared.
During that period, she confided in her trusted friend and former security consultant, Gavin de Becker, regarding the distressing incident. However, she has since chosen to openly address it, aiming to offer solace to others who might be grappling with similar experiences. “Each person navigates their own journey of healing in their unique time frame. I aspire to stand as a supporter, encouraging women to voice their realities,” she emphasized.
