Shannen Doherty Continues to Exemplify Resilience and Bravery. In a recent revelation, the famed Beverly Hills 90210 icon candidly discussed her ongoing fight against cancer, providing her fans with an update on her health status. Regrettably, within this update came some profoundly saddening news.
The relentless progression of Doherty’s stage four breast cancer has now extended to her brain. Despite overcoming cancer previously, she faced a recurrence in February 2019. Since then, she has been transparently chronicling her journey and openly addressing the obstacles that living with cancer entails.
Doherty shared a poignant video on her Instagram account on Tuesday, capturing a vulnerable moment as tears welled up in her eyes while receiving treatment. The video’s caption bore the date “January 12, 2023.”
“In my CT scan on January 5th, the presence of metastases in my brain was revealed. The video from yesterday documented the process of being fitted for the radiation mask used during brain radiation,” the caption explained. “On January 12, I underwent my initial round of radiation treatment.”
Acknowledging her visible trepidation, Doherty, aged 52, reflected, “My anxiety is palpable. With my strong aversion to confinement and the multitude of challenges life presented, I wrestled with these emotions.” She continued, “I am fortunate to be under the care of exceptional professionals like Dr. Amin (Mirhadi) and the incredible technicians at Cedar Sinai. However, that apprehension… the inner turmoil… the impeccably bad timing… This illustrates the face of cancer.”
A day earlier, she shared a nostalgic video from January, showing the process of having a thermoplastic mask fitted onto her face and neck.
In a separate video recorded on January 16, the actress reveals, “January 16, 2023. Surgery. A tumor in my head required removal, along with a biopsy.”
In the footage, she engages in an off-camera conversation with a woman, presumably a nurse, who is assessing her limbs and providing insights about the post-operative phase.
Though she endeavors to display courage, Doherty expressed, “I’m making a clear effort to be strong, yet inside, I’m paralyzed by fear.” She continued, “The magnitude of anxiety engulfed me. I was apprehensive about potential unfavorable outcomes, concerned about the impact on my mother if things went awry, and fearful that post-surgery, I might not recognize myself anymore.”
Doherty received a wave of support from her close friends, who shared uplifting messages.
Director Kevin Smith penned a heartfelt note, describing her as his “irreplaceable friend.” He expressed, “Cheering you on, my irreplaceable friend. Your life has been a testament to unwavering strength, but it’s okay to feel vulnerable at times. As those moments pass, let your unyielding Doherty spirit emerge once more. My affection for you knows no bounds, my Mallrat.”
Selma Blair extended her wishes for “calming serenity” to find Shannen Doherty in the midst of her battle with cancer. Among those rallying behind the Charmed actress was Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Doherty herself shared a collection of images from her friends, including Gellar, and conveyed her gratitude for their tremendous support. In an earlier post, the actress described her mother as “a guiding light, an endless source of encouragement and affection, and one of my most cherished individuals.”
After her initial diagnosis in 2015, Doherty took legal action against her former manager for neglecting her health insurance, leading to a delay in her breast cancer diagnosis by doctors. Subsequently, it came to light that she had reached a settlement.
