The Consequences of Excessive Tanning: Patricia Krentcil’s Journey from Infamy to Transformation

Many individuals seek a sun-kissed complexion, whether by basking in natural sunlight or resorting to indoor tanning methods. The latter involves the use of machines emitting ultraviolet radiation to achieve a cosmetic tan, commonly found in gyms, spas, hotels, sports facilities, and tanning salons.

However, what happens when the pursuit of a tan crosses the line of moderation?

In 2012, Patricia Krentcil gained notoriety and became widely known as the “Tan Mom,” captivating the public’s attention due to her extreme tanning habits and involvement in a highly publicized case that sent shockwaves across the nation.

It was in May 2012 that this online sensation faced severe backlash after being accused of taking her then-5-year-old daughter, Anna, into a tanning bed. The incident attracted the attention of authorities and child services, resulting in Krentcil’s arrest and subsequent charges of child endangerment.

Although Krentcil’s affinity for tanning had been evident throughout her life, with acquaintances from her past attesting to her penchant for indoor tanning, the repercussions became apparent. In addition to the difficulties stemming from her excessive habit, she has also faced numerous personal challenges.

Nevertheless, it appears that Krentcil’s life has taken a new turn. While she was once recognized for her excessively bronzed appearance, she has shown that it is never too late to embrace change.

The Skin Cancer Organization: The Risks and Consequences of Tanning

According to the Skin Cancer Organization, whether obtained indoors or outdoors, tanning poses significant risks and can have adverse effects on individuals. The organization boldly states that there is no such thing as a safe or healthy tan.

Tanning not only damages skin cells and increases the risk of DNA damage but also heightens the chances of developing basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

In fact, the organization reports a staggering 75% increased risk of developing life-threatening melanoma from just a single indoor tanning session before the age of 35.

Alarming statistics reveal that one in five Americans will experience skin cancer by the time they reach 70 years old. Shockingly, the number of skin cancer cases resulting from indoor tanning worldwide surpasses the incidence of lung cancer cases caused by smoking.

While many individuals indulge in tanning for aesthetic purposes, it is important to acknowledge the downsides that can result in an appearance worse than anticipated. The Skin Cancer Organization highlights how tanning alters and ages the skin, often leading to a weathered or leathery appearance, accelerated wrinkle formation, and the development of dark spots.

Despite the inherent risks associated with tanning, numerous individuals still seek the sun’s rays or resort to artificial methods, including figures like Patricia Krentcil.

Krentcil gained notoriety in the early 2010s due to her excessive tanning habits, which raised concerns when it was revealed that she had allegedly exposed her 5-year-old daughter to tanning as well.

The saga began when a nurse at the daughter’s school noticed a rash and the child reportedly disclosed her visits to a tanning salon with her mother.

Authorities and Child Services Step In: ABC News Reveals the Intervention

ABC News disclosed that authorities and child services became involved in the case following Patricia Krentcil’s visit to the school clinic. Concerns arose, prompting intervention in the matter.

The owner of City Tropics, the tanning salon frequented by the Tan Mom, divulged that she would spend approximately $100 per month in her quest for a sun-kissed complexion.

According to the salon owner, identified only as Anthony, Krentcil would visit their establishment five days a week, spending a maximum of 12 minutes in the tanning booth.

Yahoo! reported that Krentcil faced charges of child endangerment and was subsequently arrested. However, her time behind bars was short-lived as she spent only a week in jail before the charges were dropped. Throughout the ordeal, she consistently maintained her innocence, vehemently denying any instance of exposing her daughter Anna to harmful UV rays or tanning beds.

The New York Post stated that the charges stemmed from Krentcil taking her daughter into a tanning booth, an act prohibited in New Jersey, where children under the age of 14 are not permitted to use tanning salons.

Following the incident, visible burns appeared on Krentcil’s daughter’s legs, leading to her arrest in April 2012. However, a grand jury declined to indict her in 2013, allowing her to retain custody and continue spending time with her daughter.

Upon her release on a $25,000 bail, Krentcil adamantly proclaimed, “I never once in my life let my daughter, especially at that age, go into a tanning booth. I’m very tan, and I’ve been tanning my whole life.”

Unprecedented Tanning Habits: Dr. Zeichner’s Perspective and Celebrity Voices

Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Medical Center’s dermatology department, shared his astonishment at Patricia Krentcil’s tanning habits, revealing that it was the first time he had encountered such an extreme case in his years as a dermatologist. In a Daily News article, he expressed his professional opinion that frequenting a tanning salon multiple times a month was “insane,” despite the well-established warnings about the dangers of tanning beds.

Dr. Zeichner delved further into the possibility of Krentcil being addicted to tanning, a condition he referred to as “tanorexia.” He emphasized the need for both addressing the adverse effects on her skin and exploring the psychological aspects, as individuals like her could be struggling with “body dysmorphic disorders.” These disorders manifest as dissatisfaction when looking in the mirror, leading some individuals to pursue elective cosmetic procedures.

Even Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi from the reality TV show “Jersey Shore” chimed in, expressing her opinion on the Tan Mom’s intense tanning habits and child endangerment charges, describing her as “crazy.” She emphasized that it was common knowledge that children should not be taken to tanning salons. The cast of “Jersey Shore” has become synonymous with their deep tans.

Several other celebrities have also shared their perspectives on avoiding excessive tanning. Rosie Huntington-Whitely admitted her love for a sun-kissed glow but acknowledged the visible effects on her skin as she grew older, once the tan faded. Hugh Jackman has been a vocal advocate for sun safety, urging his supporters to use sunscreen regularly and undergo routine check-ups.

As public figures and medical professionals express their concerns, it becomes evident that responsible sun exposure and protection are essential for maintaining healthy skin.

Zac Efron, who appeared in the “Baywatch” movie,” echoed Jackman’s thoughts. He said, “Wear sunscreen every day, please. No amount of sun is safe, in my opinion.”

Tan Mom’s story might seem hard to believe at times, which is probably why it sounded like such a strong basis for a movie adaptation. According to a March 2013 article from Radar Online, Krentcil was set to star in a movie about her life, appropriately titled “Tanning Mom — The Movie.”

“I’ll star — it’s going to portray everything that’s happened,” Krentcil explained. She also said that her newfound fame at the time resulted in some modeling offers that came her way. “Everybody wants me,” the mom boasted.

However, based on Krentcil’s IMDb page, it seems like the movie never came to be.

In June 2019, a dark cloud reigned over Krentcil’s life as she was in critical condition from pneumonia.

Her songwriting partner at the time, Adam Barta, told Us Weekly that the viral personality was on “life support” and was in a “medically induced sleep” until she recovered. Barta continued:

“They are feeding her very strong antibiotics to kill the infection as well so her system is taking quite a hit. I personally believe last night was the most critical turning point, and she made it so she will only continue to get better. The current plan is to try to extubate and revive her tomorrow or Tuesday, provided she maintains this trajectory.”

Family Support and Health Challenges: Krentcil’s Journey to Recovery

According to reports, Krentcil’s children temporarily moved to Florida to be by her side during her hospitalization. The New York Post also stated that she faced additional health issues, including pancreatitis, cardiac arrest, and a lung infection.

Thankfully, Krentcil managed to achieve a full recovery. However, reflecting on the harrowing experience, the Tan Mom described it as “sad.”

“My whole body died — I was proclaimed dead,” she said.

Krentcil may have risen to fame in 2012, but a former classmate of hers claimed that she had been addicted to tanning since she was in high school. The unnamed old friend, who claimed to have spent over two years with Krentcil during her younger years, revealed that Krentcil was “wacky” and “crazy” back then.

The insider described her as someone who has some “strangeness” within her and experimented with substances and tanning. The source remembered that she was on “the tan side” and they would go to the beach, but she clarified that “fake-tanning was never a thing.”

In April 2021 — almost a decade after she was charged with child endangerment for allegedly exposing her daughter to artificial UV rays in a tanning salon — Krentcil spoke about how far she had come in her life since.

“I was dubbed ‘Tan Mom’ all over tabloids, and this turned into the most massive hurricane in the world,” the mom said. “It went global. There are no words to describe what happened to me and my family.”

Krentcil continued, “I was accused of child endangerment. I was vindicated through the courts.” The mom added, “The owner of the tanning salon told the police when they came and asked, ‘Did she bring her daughter into the booth?’ and the owner said, ‘No.’”

Krentcil stated, “I did nothing wrong, period.”

Interestingly enough, the mom did admit that she still tanned twice a week in her own tanning bed.

Fast-forward to May 2022, and the mom said she’s not the person she used to be. “I changed my whole attitude on life. I’ve turned my life around. I don’t get disrespected anymore. I don’t party or do any crazy things,” she said.

Navigating Fame, Loss, and Moving Forward: Krentcil’s Journey

Despite the tremendous fame she acquired after being in the spotlight, Krentcil revealed that she was emotionally overwhelmed and faced financial struggles, as her child-endangerment case nearly cost her “two houses.”

She expressed that the media took a toll on her, draining her “whole soul” and “energy,” and the person she relied on the most was her husband. Sadly, her husband Richard passed away in 2021.

Speaking about her relationship with her children, Anna and Addison, the Tan Mom affirmed that she has always been a devoted mother and will continue to strive for their well-being.

“I believe anyone in my position at that particular moment would have felt overwhelmed, but I had the strength to stay strong even during my darkest hours,” she shared.

However, in September 2022, Krentcil shared a photo of herself visiting a spa in Florida that offered tanning services. She expressed her positive experience, praising the spa’s exceptional treatment and encouraging others to visit.

In a subsequent Instagram post in January 2023, Krentcil appeared different from her previous deeply tanned appearance, indicating a positive direction amidst challenging times. She mentioned recovering from the flu and getting her hair done, expressing gratitude and well wishes to her followers.

Many supportive comments flooded the post, applauding Krentcil for her stunning appearance. People complimented her beauty and admired her new look. It is hoped that Krentcil continues to make healthy progress in her life moving forward.
