Hannah worked her night shift at Joe’s Crab Shack in Daytona Beach, Florida.
As night falls, Hanna remembers hearing a woman screaming for help from the beach below, and the voices of people screaming through the chaos.
Screaming was a frantic mother whose young son was caught in the middle of a heavy meltdown. Hanna looked down from the sidewalk and realized no one was actually trying to save the boy.
“I saw the mother screaming and crying. Just hearing her scream terrified me. Then I saw the little boy… his head kept hanging down,” Hanna Benatto told the Daytona Beach News Journal.

“I didn’t want the kid to die. Hanna said he wasn’t a kid, he was 7 and 8, but I mean, that’s human life – you can’t look at that and distract the look.”

“She kept saying, ‘I’m sorry, don’t get mad at me,’ and I was like, ‘Hannah, I was trying to save someone,’” Heather Benato said.
