For as long as she can remember, Treka Engleman knew that her destiny was to become a mother. Treka, a math teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio, says she has always found it natural to take care of children, even if she grew up motherless in her life. When she was six years old, she lost her own mother. However, any insecurity that she was a mother did not stop Treka from fulfilling her own dream of becoming a mother. It all started with a foster family, and Treka loved the idea of having foster children in her home. However, since she was a single woman, she was not sure if she qualified.
To her surprise, Treka met all the requirements of a foster mother, except for one: she needed her own home. At the time, she lived in a house with her sister. However, she quickly found a two-bedroom apartment and moved into it, willing to do anything to become a foster mother. The rest of the requirements were simple since she was over 21 years old and had a regular job as a teacher. After two months of class, Treka was ready to welcome her first adopted child from the St. Joseph Orphanage. She had the opportunity to choose the race of the child, but it didn’t matter to her.

Treka says that “Love is love no matter what color you are.” It was December 2016 when Treka welcomed five-day-old Elijah into her home. The little boy quickly won Treka’s heart and that only grew when she took in a little girl six months later. Alexis was her name and she was a sweetheart. She also had a sister named Mercedes who was supposed to come to Treka’s home with her, but apparently the child had problem behavior that landed her in a group home. However, Treka and the other two kids visited Mercedes on the weekends.

In March 2018, Treka got a bigger apartment and at that time, Mercedes joined the family. Life with three kids wasn’t easy on the single woman, but she was up for the task. Treka had never been happier. When she asked the kids if she could adopt them, they were ecstatic. “The way they lit up with excitement when they found out it was happening will forever be one of the best memories,” she said.
