The couple John and Charlotte Henderson from Austin just received an amazing title. It’s something that many couples will strive to achieve, but only few will reach. According to Guinness World Records, the couple just became the oldest married couple in the world, at a combined age of 211 years old, John, 106 and Charlotte 105.
And guess What? On December 15, they will celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary. What an amazing couple!
The couple met way back in 1934 in class while attending the University of Texas. They got married in December 1939, and spent their honeymoon in a hotel room that cost only $7.
So what’s the secret to the couple’s record-breaking marriage and surpassing 100 years of life?
“Living in moderation,” John told USA Today in 2017. “We never overdo anything. Eat well. Sleep well. Don’t overdrink. Don’t overeat. And exercise regularly.”
In addition to being one part of the oldest married couple, John is also the oldest living former UT football player. And for the past 84 years the couple has attended at least one UT football game a season.
“We had such a good time when John retired. We traveled a lot,” Charlotte said. “We just stay busy all the time, and I’m sure that helps.”
Now the couple stays active at Longhorn Village, a senior living community for UT staff and alumni.
