The owner of the Pizza Inn restaurant in Greenville, South Carolina just posted a defiant sign on the door of her business after a customer complained about one of her employees.

Amanda Cartagine explained to reporters that more than half of the staffers in her kitchen have special needs, and she does whatever she can to make them feel like they are part of her team.

“If you have the patience to let them take their time and learn at their pace, when the light bulb comes on, they are unstoppable,” Amanda said.

Last week, a customer approached a staffer who has autism and asked him to refill a lettuce bowl not knowing that  the employee had not been trained to do the task.

“My manager explained to him the situation privately, ‘That’s not his job. We’ve trained him to do this and there are special circumstances,’ and the customer was still not happy,” Amanda said. The customer responded by saying that they should post a sign so that customers will be aware of this.

“These are like my kids, and it made me angry. I wanted to do something that was not rude, but got my point across,” Amanda added.

That’s why Amanda posted a sign on the door of her business that read, “We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and hire all of God’s children.”

Angie Mosley, whose son has Down syndrome, has been working at Pizza Inn for a few months, and she hopes the sign makes people more open minded.

“He loved the first paycheck,” Angie said. “He loved the fact that he has money in the bank and he can actually go buy his favorite video game.”
