Shell Jones Opened The Play-Place for Autistic Children finally for public last Monday after 4 long years of fundraising.
Shell’s son has autism. She mentioned that sometimes when they’d go out in public, people would stare and whisper, so the idea to create a safe space came naturally.
The Play-Place has a carousel, a computer café, a bistro, a play space, and a movie theater with reduced sound and increased light levels.
The center also offers kid-friendly haircuts, as well as “calming rooms” for kids having tantrums.
The Play-Place also plans to hold specialized classes in art, music, theater, and even Lego robotics.
They also offer CBI (Community-Based Instruction) which teaches living skills in real world settings, like time management, finances, hygiene, and manners.
The Play-Place’s goal is to provide a fun-filled, judgement-free space for kids, and to build a community of families who can support each other.
