If you’ve ever been rug shopping, then you know how high-priced rugs can be, and how difficult it is selecting one that you like.
Stephanie encountered this very situation and had the idea to see if she couldn’t just make her own area rug. After all, a friend of hers had done it a few years ago, so why shouldn’t she be able to?
Stephanie says, “A few years ago, when I visited my friend Kyrie’s dorm room, I was beyond impressed with her area rug. I remember my initial assumption was that she didn’t spend a ton of money on it because she just wouldn’t have. But I was puzzled because it was seriously the coolest.”
Stephanie realized that her friend had made the rug, by actually collecting a bunch of carpet squares and simply connecting them all together, creating a massive area rug. Oh, and she used duct tape to do it!
Stephanie was sold. She went forth and created her own DIY area rug, using what she had learned from her friend, while modifying a few things along the way. Her total cost? A whopping 30 bucks!
So how did Stephanie do it? Here’s what she did:
She first collected as many carpet squares as she thought she would need, according to the exact size rug she wanted. She got the pieces from different carpet stores, as well as random ads on Craigslist.
Most of the time each square only cost 1-2 dollars!
While it would prove impossible to find all in the same color, she at least focused on getting those that were of the same material and the same size.
She went ahead and bought some extra squares as well, to allow her some room for design options.
Then she laid out the pattern she wanted to create.
“After switching squares around for a little while while playing with the colors, I got to the real work. Surprisingly, it took less than an hour,” Stephanie said.
Instead of duct tape, Stephanie went with a carpet adhesive which she thought would be more sturdy due to the large size of rug she was creating. The adhesive went for under 4 bucks.
She cut into strips so everything was prepared to go.
She followed the instructions for peeling the strips and used the strips to attach the carpet squares.

You can hardly notice the gap between the squares when it’s all connected.
When she got toward completion, she used a few accent colored pieces which would fill in the tiny holes in the center.
After that she hit the Dollar Store, picked up a few rolls of shelf liner, and attached it to the carpet underneath. This way the rug won’t slip and slide, while also providing protection to the floor.
Stephanie says, “There you have it! I am so happy with it. I love how it grounds the room, adding a coziness that was previously lacking. And, of course, I love that the entire project cost under $30!”
