Jadav Molai Peyeng, a citizen of Northeast India who has been planting trees for 35 years. He started doing so since 1979. His main mission was to save an island named Majuli, which is inhabited by 150,000 people. Its land mass was shrinking down and has lost half of its size because of erosion.
Jadav decided to do something to save his island…
Jadav was convinced that the roots of the trees will prevent the erosion of the soil. For This, he He planted thousands of plants, trees and 300 hectares of bamboo.
Thanks to his unbelievable efforts, his forest is larger than New York’s Central Park. It measures 1,360 acres.
Jadav’s forest did not only prevent erosion of the soil and saved the island, but also provided a home for Indian rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, deer, rabbits, apes, birds and a big number of vultures.
The forest received a herd of 100 elephants every year. They stay there for six months and gave birth of 10 calves in the last years.
His story has urged filmmaker William Douglas McMaster to write and direct the following documentary “Forest Man”, which won the best Documentary at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
