Heather Whitten, a photographer and mom-of-two, has divided netizens after sharing a photo of her husband and son in what some have called “beautiful” and others have labelled “disgusting”.
The photo, originally posted in 2014, showed Heather’s husband Thomas and son Fox in the shower when Fox was extremely ill with salmonella poisoning.
Heather wrote, “Thomas had spent hours in the shower with [Fox], trying to keep his fever down and letting the vomit and diarrhoea rinse off of them both as it came.”
“As I sat in the shower with the two of them I was just overwhelmed with the scene in front of me. This man. This husband and partner and father. He was so patient and loving and so strong with our tiny son in his lap.”
But while some viewers were touched by the image, others reported it and the photo was removed from Facebook and resulted in Heather’s Instagram account being banned.
Heather repeatedly posted the photo again, writing, “There is nothing sexual or exploitative about this image. I was taken aback by how many people missed the story or didn’t even look past the nudity to find the story.”
The issue with the image for many commenters seems to be that it shows a man with a child, which for some reason is less acceptable than a woman, with people criticising Thomas for showering with his son and even appearing nude in front of him at all.
A growing number of people, however, are supporting Heather’s decision to document and share an intimate family moment even if it does (shock horror) include a nude father.
