In Ann Arbor, Michigan, people started noticing a series of what is known as ‘fairy doors’, popping up around the area in 2005,
Those tiny doors built into buildings, shops and restaurants quickly became famous around the town making locals develop a cult following.
Father and children’s book author, Jonathan B. Wright, believed to be the maker of the whimsical tiny portals, is kind of like the Banksy of fairy doors.
He got the idea first in the early 1990s when he was renovating his house and thought of making fairy doors for his daughters (one in the fireplace and two in the kitchen).
“1993 or so is when we first discovered one in our own home. Inside of that door is a stairway that leads up to yet another door that has been locked every time that we’ve checked.”
A decade later, he decided to spread the concept publicly.
On April 7, 2005, the first public fairy door appeared outside Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea. Ten days later, the Peaceable Kingdom one appeared.

These tiny doors received a lot of praise and love especially from children who tend to leave small gifts like pennies, drawings, tiny packages, candies, and little notes outside them.
“There are multiple things that have surprise me about the whole phenomena. One is the concept of things that are left for the fairies, their gifts. Somewhat like a wishing well concept, I guess, that children for the most part leave coins and drawings and little tiny trinkets for the fairies in the hopes that it will be a gesture of good will.”
