When Fukushima nuclear disaster has occured on March 2011, Many Japanese citizens have suffered and their properties were damaged. They Were ordered to evacuate a radius of 20 Km (12 miles). But there is another organization that had also endured the same painful accident: the animals were left after people fled the radioactive zone for nearby shelters. However, one man didn’t forget about these animals and couldn’t help feeling guilty to leave them suffering. Naoto Matsumura, 55 years old decided to return to his home where he had spent his entire life and take care not only of his family’s farm animals but some cattle and livestock that were abandoned in other farms.
Naoto returned to the empty town and started over his life but alone. Despite the risks, he was happier and relieved to be able to feed and take care of the animals with money and food that were donated by others.
According to one of his interviews, Naoto is being bombarded with as much as 17 times the quantity of radiation a normal person is; but medical researchers and scientists confirmed that being exposed to such amount of radiation wouldn’t get him sick for up to 30-40 years which made Naoto much more relieved to continue with the decision he made for living.
Naoto is now known as the ‘guardian of Fukushima’s animals’ because of the effort and the sacrifice he did to feed the animals left behind by people. He is aware of the radiation he is subject to on a daily basis, but he “refuses to worry about it.” He does take steps, however, by only eating food imported into the zone.
