Diana Kim had a father who was photographer, she and her family lived on the Island of Maui where she first learned her trade. After her parents’ split, Kim started moved to live with her friends and relatives. Her father become “Absent” and she then lost any contact with him. In 2003, Kim started her own project about homeless, It was a long-term project since it took her 10 years of photographing homeless people. In 2012, Kim found her father among the homeless she was documenting in Honolulu.
“There were nights when I wouldn’t find him,” Kim told NBC News. “And other days when I least expected it, and he would be standing on the corner of a street. He suffered from severe schizophrenia, and left untreated, he was not always responsive. There were many instances when it appeared as if he was arguing with someone, but nobody was there.”
Kim wanted to take care of her father, she continued to bring him food and urged him to seek treatment, but he was convinced only after having a heart attack in October 2014. Fortunately, Kim’s father is doing very well: he is taking his treatment, seeking a part-time job, and even has plans to visit his family in South Korea.
