Three-time world champion Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark on live TV during a World Surfing League (WSL) competition at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. Video of the incident shows at least one shark fin circling the World Surf League champion. Fanning spots it and starts furiously paddling away.
Things were going well for Mick as he entered the final round of the competition.
But then Nick fell off of his board, and suddenly, the unmistakable silhouette of a shark fin appeared behind him.
The massive animal attacked Mick’s board repeatedly as he struggled to get away.
It was a fight for his life, and Mick rose to the challenge. “I just saw fins. I punched it in the back,” the champion surfer said.
Rescue boats rushed to pull Mick and his competitor, Australian Julian Wilson, out of the water. Both surfers were brought back to shore unharmed.
Mick gets a hug from fellow champion, US surfer Kelly Slater, after his harrowing rescue.
