Consuming dog meat is still considered as a tradition in many Asian countries. In Yulin, China, People celebrate their summer solstice by throwing a festival which involves slaughtering and eating approximately 10,000 dogs.
Not all Chinese people encourage this kind of practice. One of theme are the 65-year-old retired school teacher, Yang Xioayun who decided to step up for rescuing dogs from such cruel death. Xioayun who is an owner of animal shelter in Tianjin, traveled more than 2,400 km (1,500 miles) and spent more than 7,000 yuan ($1,100 or €990) to save 100 dogs from certain death.
Many Activists in China with Xioayun included expressed their condemnation and accused the festival organizers’ for unnecessary cruelty and torture.
It is amazing to see what people can do to defend animals’ lives like Yang Xioayun who decided to put her foot down. Rather than just sit idly by, she actually did something. Something unbelievable.
