Russell O’Grady, 48, who has Down’s syndrome, joined the Sydney West branch’s team, Australia, in 1986, at the age of 18, on a work experience placement organised by Jobsupport.

At that time, Russell was very popular among his coworkers and customers and also an icon because he was one of the first 100 people in the country to secure regular employment with down syndrome

Russell started working for the restaurant at a time when it was less common for people with learning disabilities to embark on career paths.

Russell recentlyannounced his retirement from the fast-food chain in order to focus on his health

His supervisor, Courtney Purcell, said:

“We’ve got regular customers who come in to see Russell on Thursday and Friday, and the staff look after him, so we’re going to miss him.”

The career changed Russell’s outlook on his life.

His dad, Geoff explained people have stopped in the street to shake his son’s hand, adding: “He’s very affectionate, dearly loved and appreciated, to such an extent that we just don’t believe it.”

“Somebody said to him ”are you handicapped?”’ and his answer was, “I used to be when I went to school, but now I work at McDonald’s,”’ he said.

He started with the company on work experience through the Job Support scheme, but showed how hard he would graft and moved through the ranks, securing a full-time job packing party boxes.

O’Grady broke down barriers for those with down syndrome to enter the workforce.

But despite the fact that he has absolutely loved working there, he came to the decision that retirement was the best option for him due to his health.

Great job Russell, enjoy your well-deserved retirement!
