British author and researcher Graham Hancock presented his work on the human consciousness to a TEDx audience in January 2013. In his summary titled, “The War on Consciousness,” he discussed its historical origins as well as some of his personal experiences. He compared the cultural practices and values between the people that practiced a lifestyle based on a visionary state of consciousness versus those practiced in our industrial world.
His talk was so controversial that he was banned from the TEDx website and Youtube Channel. Ironically, the name of the TEDx event was “Visions for Transition: Challenging Existing Paradigms and Redefining Values (for a more beautiful world).”
During his presentation, Hancock discussed shamanic spirituality as an effective healing discipline because it attempts to realign one with the “spirit” world and why these practices are demonized in our modern world. Western society places more value in, what Hancock deems to be, the “alert problem-solving state of consciousness” that has led us down a path of destruction.
After being banned from TED, Hancock held a podcast interview with Joe Rogan wherein he discusses the events that took place. He said that The TED officials described his talk as “pseudo scientific” and that he alleged that DMT enabled one to contact spirits from past cultures. In fact, Hancock clearly states during the presentation, “I am making no claim one way or the other as to the reality status of these entities that we encounter.” He believes that the scientific community dismissed the video before even watching it because of the stigma that surrounds altered states of consciousness; especially when they threaten our current way of life.
Since being banned, TEDx has received a lot of backlash and criticism. As a result, Hancock’s video has been posted on the blog section of the website.
“Inability to accept the mystic experience is more than an intellectual handicap. Lack of awareness of the basic unity of organism and environment is a serious and dangerous hallucination. For in a civilization equipped with immense technological power, the sense of alienation between man and nature leads to the use of technology in a hostile spirit—to the “conquest” of nature instead of intelligent co-operation with nature.” – Alan Watts
