The War On Drugs Vs Its Legalization

The War on Drugs has been a part of America’s political agenda since the early 1970’s. It began when former President Richard Nixon stated that drug addiction had become a national emergency. Since that time billions of dollars and a lot of lives have been lost. The truth is that America lost the war on drugs as far back as the early 1990’s. While this “war” still continued to rage on it never reached its intended objective. That is to eliminate the scourge of drug addiction and the negative issues that accompany this way of life.

Overall drug use within the United States has declined since the early 1970’s. However, new generations of people are becoming more tolerant of drugs. Culturally speaking, when the war on drugs first began many people were in support of this effort. One major problem with this conflict that very few people expected to happen was the surge of drug use within the suburbs. No longer was drug addiction contained to the inner city neighborhoods of metropolitan areas; it had spread out into the suburban communities all throughout America. Since this happened many people began to realize that this war wasn’t just limited to poor minorities it also included their children and their neighbors.

Added to this dilemma is the fact that people are now becoming more open to the use of drugs. As a matter of fact, more than half of all American’s are now clamoring for the legalization of marijuana. This new phenomena has also helped to bring about the demise of the War on Drugs.

The politicians know that the drug war was a huge failure. They tried to educate people about the issue and they used billions of dollars to try and eliminate it. The bottom line is that people did not and still do not care about the use of drugs. Let this point be clarified. While it is true that the average person does not go around smoking crack, snorting coke and shooting up heroine; it is true that they no longer condemn people who use drugs on a recreational basis.

The legalization of weed is a perfect example of this truth. Again, many people have been educated enough to stay away from drugs and they realize that it is no good for the body. However, there is more than enough people within society who indulge in weed smoking on a regular basis. While the average person might not join in with weed smokers they do not sit around and waste their time condemning people who do smoke marijuana. This is a reason as to why drugs have become more popular today, even though they are still shunned by society as a whole.

The government has tried to deter people away from drugs through stiffer penalties for offenses. Many drug offenses carry harsh penalties that many say does not fit the crime. Regardless, stiffer penalties have not deterred people from dealing or using drugs. The reality is that people see drug trafficking as a viable economic business. Drug users will always want to do drugs becuase it provides them with a way to escape their problems, relieve stress and its a form of recreation. All of these reasons help to explain why people are no longer trying to fight a war that realistically cannot be won. People demand drugs and as long as they do there will always be addicts, sellers and traffickers.

Do not forget the prescription drugs are also a problem for people as far as drug addiction is concerned. This is part of drug addiction was not easy to detect and it went unnoticed for many years until the late 2000’s when a surge of people were being diagnosed with drug addictions related to prescription based narcotics. Again, people like to use drugs. Whether they are legal or not apparently does not matter.
