The 5 Gut Instincts You Must Listen To

Although we hardly ever recognize it, our intuition, occasionally referred to as our “gut instinct”, guides the decisions we make every day. Buried deep in the back of your head, it is your inner voice that warns you against doing bad or dumb things, such as driving your car down the wrong side of the road.

Unfortunately, as we get older, we have the tendency to ignore our intuition. However, there are 5 instincts you should never ignore. Let’s take a look at them.

1. The situation could be dangerous.

While this pertains to the earlier instance of driving down the wrong side of the road, it also involves plenty of additional situations. For example, getting into a car with a drunk driver, walking home alone late at night, or having the eerie feeling that someone is watching you are all instances that can trigger your gut instinct into telling you that you are in danger. The great thing about being a human is our “fight or flight response” that kicks in when we feel we are in danger. If you feel like you are in danger, never be afraid to choose flight. Keep in mind that most people are good and do want to help you.

2. You just don’t feel right/ normal.

If you feel like there is something in your body that just isn’t right, it is imperative that you listen to your gut instinct and get it checked out. The human body is designed to instinctively alert you when something is out of balance or wrong. If your body is sending out an alarm, visit a medical professional. In some situations, it could be the difference between life and death.

This applies to your mental health as well. If you are constantly depressed or anxious, seek professional help.

3. This just feels right.

Just like your body will tell you when something feels wrong, it also lets you know when something feels right. Don’t ignore this feeling. Understanding when something you are doing or someone you are with makes you feel right is an important thing to do.

4. I need to help someone.

When your body tells you that you need to take a minute and help someone, stop and do it, whether you know the person or not. For example, if you come across a homeless person who is hungry and you have a couple packs of crackers in your bag, give them to the person. If it’s freezing outside and you see someone who is obviously not dressed appropriately, why not give them your jacket if you have several more at home. If you notice someone pulled over on the side of the road, stop and ask if they need help. In simple terms, if you feel like you need to help someone, stop and do it. In today’s world, empathy has fallen to the wayside. However, every positive action will have a ripple effect.

5. I’m a total natural at this!

Everyone is naturally talented at something, though we often don’t realize it until you are doodling on a piece of paper while sitting in a meeting or filling in for someone at the last minute at the local theater. When you discover what you are naturally talented at, don’t forget about it. Now, this doesn’t mean that you should just give up your career and strike out at something else, but don’t forget about your natural talent either.
